The D7 is Portugal's residence pathway for foreigners who can demonstrate stable, recurring passive income. It is the most popular non-EU route for retirees, FIRE'd individuals, and remote workers whose income comes from outside Portugal. The minimum income threshold is benchmarked to the Portuguese minimum wage (≈ €870/month per main applicant in 2026, plus 50% per adult dependent and 30% per child). Approval typically takes 60–120 days; the initial visa is valid for 4 months and converts to a 2-year residence permit on arrival, renewable for 3 more years. After 5 years of legal residence and Portuguese A2 language, the holder can apply for permanent residence or citizenship.

Spending more than 183 days/year in Portugal makes you a Portuguese tax resident on worldwide income. The Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime that previously offered 10-year tax breaks closed to new applicants on 31 December 2023; the replacement IFICI / NHR 2.0 regime targets specific high-value-added professions. D7 holders without IFICI eligibility pay regular Portuguese rates — see our /tax/calculator/pt page for a 2026 estimate.
Triggering threshold: more than 183 days physical presence.
